Melanie's Travel Supplements

Melanie Figeley

Caribbean is my happy place, Me loving Magen's Bay, St. Thomas

I travel a lot for work and pleasure! Recently, I was cruising the Caribbean. We had no choice but to eat on the ship. I maintained a supplement protocol and made the best choices I could by asking the right questions, mostly about cooking oils and gluten. Organic anything was out of the question! I always go for the meat and veggie option. Looking for the usual code words “crusted, crispy, marinated”, etc. I believe the cleaner one has eaten for a longer time, the easier something like a dairy based soup will take us down! Even that “Vacation Splurge Meal” will have you regretting you splurged. Whether it’s a headache or digestive upset, no one wants to not feel 100% on vacation! Not worth it!

Hanging with sea turtles in Barbados!

With that said, here is the protocol I used to keep myself somewhat protected from anything that might get into my system.

* Gluterase® (2) with the first bite. This is Bioitcs’ wildly popular incidental gluten exposure product. The enzyme, Tolerase G, will latch itself on to proline in the gluten and start to break it down before it can be absorbed by the intestines. Disclaimer: This is for accidental or incidental exposure, not a reach for the bread basket pass. ☺

* Betaine-Plus HP™ (1-2) with each meal. This is Biotics high potency hydrochloric acid. Helps the stomach get that extra kick to break down or burn up anything that might be trying to multiply in the stomach. Not for those with ulcers or any kind of gastric lesions.

* Beta-TCP™ (1-2) with meal. A blend of taurine, vitamin C, pancrelipase, and organic beet concentrate helps in supporting healthy bile flow to bind and move toxins out of the system.

* Bromelain Plus CLA™ (1-2) with each meal. This supplemental enzyme support helps break down the proteins, fats, and carbs in foods. Also, it can be taken on an empty stomach to help fight inflammation, should you misstep and hurt your ankle or get stung or bitten by a bug!

* BioProtect Plus™ (1) 3 times daily. A broad-based antioxidant, free radical, scavenging super star supplement! Perfect for all the chemically treated shower water, non-organic produce, conventional meats, and the constant spray of toxic antibacterial chemicals in the air.

*ScentArest™ was also on hand taken as needed, provides nutrients the body needs to meet the onslaught of compounds that may trigger chemical intolerance and sensitivities, and offers nutritional support for healthy, functioning detoxification pathways, mitochondrial function, and methylation processes.

Aside from supplemental support I started each day with a “shot” of kraut juice, ate kraut daily, and made sure to stay well hydrated. I was surprised how amazing my digestion was while on vacation.

In my bag I did carry an all-around holistic emergency kit. This included activated charcoal powder caps and ADP® (emulsified oregano tabs from Biotics), just in-case I got into something without knowing! I am a delicate flower. ☺

My Stash!, Intenzyme Forte and NAC boxes are FULL of supplements!

An insider tip for you. Cruise ships have Mini Fridges in the cabins. I brought on two bags of kraut, butter, coconut aminos, Nut Pods, and two cases of water. Yes, the water was in plastic bottles, but it saved us a ton of money! More things I brought on were pink salt, Dandy Blend, Vital Proteins, and my own favorite organic tea. While it may seem excessive, it was really nice to have some of my staples!

Gum Tissue: A Look Into Overall Health

Melanie Figeley

Gum Tissue: A Look Into Overall Health

We all need to practice some sort of oral hygiene routine daily. Gum tissue is often overlooked as an important part of overall health. There is a lot to be learned from observing gum tissue. Here is a quick overview of gum tissue, disorders that can be associated with gum dis-ease, and supplemental support.
Gum tissue can vary in color, ranging from pink to dark pink, ideally described as coral. Gums should be even in color; too light can indicate a vascular restriction or a fungal overgrowth, too dark can indicate inflammation and gingivitis.

Gum tissue should also be firm and tight to the teeth, holding them into place and protecting the roots from pathogens and food particles. Loose or receding gums can result in severe tooth sensitivity and an invitation for invaders to move in.

White, red, swollen, receding gums that bleed easily, are an easy way to know there is something more serious going on. There are so many dis-eases in our bodies that can stem from unhealthy gums tissue.

Bacteria and other pathogens love warm, moist environments. When sugar is consumed there can be a rapid growth in these health degrading armies. Since our mouths are a great point of entry, these armies are swallowed or absorbed and sent through the body to set up camps all over. If one is already immune compromised, this will not be tough for the pathogens to accomplish. This can lead to systemic inflammation and overall degradation of our immune systems. Down the line, possibly an autoimmune diagnosis.

Vascular health is also something that can be noticed from gum health. If gums are not the pretty shade of coral they are naturally meant to be, this can indicate a vascular issue. Diabetics and those with high blood pressure often will have a reduced or restricted vascular flow. This leads to less oxygen circulation throughout the tissues in our bodies. This will affect the nutrient delivery as well as the bacterial cleansing.

Respiratory issues can also be attributed to gum health. Bacteria hanging out in unhealthy gums can catch a ride through nasal pathways landing in the lungs. Again, a warm enclosed space such as the lungs are an optimal breeding ground for bacteria. Bacterial lung infections can cause serious issues such as pneumonia and COPD.

Add smoking to any person with poor oral hygiene or gum issues and you have a straight away for serious issues quickly. Smoking prolongs healing time, damages gum tissue, and pulls carcinogenic smoke in, on, and around gums.
As we all know, nutrition plays a role in the entire body. Gum tissue is no different than any other tissue in the body. It needs to be cared for. Practice good oral hygiene daily (brush, floss, oil pull), keep unnecessary sugars out of the diet, and eat a variety of nutrient dense organic foods. Unfortunately, extra support can still be necessary for optimal gum health.

Biotics Research has a full line of products that can help support healthy tissues of the mouth.

CoQ-Zyme 100 Plus™ - Helps in supporting receding gums and gum disease by promoting circulation. In addition, it aids in healing time from traumas and dental procedures. With added co-factors to promote optimal mitochondrial function, CoQ-Zyme 100 Plus™ supports optimal periodontal health.

Bio-ADEK-Mulsion™ - Proactive dental and oral health. May be beneficial in the support of dental cavities, bleeding gums, sensitivity due to demineralization, and receding gums or grafting.

Bio-FCTS™ - May be beneficial in the support of dental cavities, bleeding gums, sensitivity due to demineralization, and receding gums or grafting.

Cytozyme-Trachea™ - Helpful in encouraging tissue growth and repair. Provides vascular and inflammation support for damaged connective tissues.

My goal in this article is to have you broaden your thoughts when assessing the health of the person in front of you. We do look at skin, eyes, and hair for signs of dis-ease in the body. How often are you looking in their mouths? Next time there is a missing link, have them open wide or ask about their gums; perhaps there will be a clue?

CurcumRx™ & Arsenic Toxicity

Melanie Figeley

It is nearly impossible not to ingest arsenic in one form or another. Recent studies have shown Turmeric or more specifically the curcuminoid compounds found in the root have a positive effect on the DNA damage.  Curcumin has been shown to increase the repair of damage to DNA from arsenic and increased the repair enzyme, polymerase. Curcumin increased the detoxification enzymes, such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and serum oxide dismutase (SOD).

As arsenic enters our systems through food, water, and chemicals it immediately starts the oxidation process.  Oxidation leads to cellular and DNA damage.  Arsenic toxicity has a wide range of symptoms from GI distress to cancer, as it is a type one carcinogen. Let us be proactive! Biotics Research CurcumRx™’s unique composition is 100 percent turmeric, featuring a minimum of 45 percent curcuminoids plus standardized levels of more than 200 beneficial nutrients found in turmeric root – including polysaccharides, dietary fiber, turmerone oil, and turmerin fiber. It is this unique composition that is responsible for its greater absorption, stability, and bioavailability.

Air Quality Support

Melanie Figeley

Is it truly possible for us to avoid going out doors and staying in our homes all day? I wish it were that simple. Biotics Research NW has a few supplemental suggestions to help.

GHS Plus™ Provides L-Glutathione, fortified with N-acetyl-L-cysteine and glycine. Glutathione binds to a compound called nitric oxide to make nitrosoglutathione and this is the endogenous bronchodilator. A bronchodilator prevents bronchoconstriction, constriction of the bronchioles. That’s the defining feature of asthma, and one of the drugs that asthmatics have to take is a bronchodilator. If you look at asthma, not only is glutathione very depleted in the lungs but nitrosoglutathione, the endogenous bronchodilator, is very depleted. And in a severe asthma attack, nitrosoglutathione levels can reach zero. So basically, asthma — maybe this is slightly oversimplifying things, but it may be the case that we should see asthma primarily as a condition of glutathione depletion and particularly depletion of endogenous glutathione-derived bronchodilator that we then must compensate for with a pharmaceutical bronchodilator in order to try to relieve the symptoms of an asthma attack. (Thank you Chris Masterjohn, PhD)

HistoPlex AB® Suffering from airborne allergies tend to provoke responses such as respiratory symptoms, sinus congestion, nasal drainage, post-nasal drip, coughing, red, watery, runny eyes, and dark undereye circles. HistoPlex-AB® is an innovative supplement that allows you to efficiently support your symptoms.

Pneuma-Zyme supplies neonatal lung tissue concentrate from bovine along with other nutrient factors such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and citrus bioflavonoids, as well as the plant source antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Supports immune and upper respiratory health as well as proper lung function. Patients with asthma, emphysema, smoker’s cough, adrenal or cardiac stress, or environmental allergies or sensitivities may benefit from this supplement.***Use in conjunction with Oorganik-15™ with upper respiratory problems.

Caffeine

Melanie Figeley

Should I worry about caffeine and my morning supplements?

As a Nutritional Therapist, I often get asked about minerals and B-vitamins with caffeine consumption. Is it true my morning caffeine is depleting my minerals and B-vitamins? Should I wait to take my supplements until I have finished my coffee? The short answer, Yes!

Calcium
All the research I can find states that per 150 mg (one cup-ish) of caffeine roughly 5 mg of calcium is lost. This is mainly due to increased urination. We know that when calcium is lost through urine the parathyroid jumps all over returning blood calcium to homeostasis. Caffeine also inhibits the amount of calcium that is absorbed through the intestinal tract and decreasing the amount left to be retained by the bones. So, if you are an all-day coffee drinker, over time you may in fact see some negative effects. Studies have shown that women with high caffeine intake suffer more hip fractures than those who avoid caffeine or drink in moderation (1 to 2 cups per day).

Magnesium
Magnesium is a crucial mineral that works with calcium and vitamin D to facilitate the muscle contraction-relaxation response and aid in energy production; it also plays a key role in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. Therefore, depletion due to coffee intake can be worrisome.

Iron
Caffeine interferes with the body’s absorption of iron, which is necessary for red blood cell production. Drinking caffeine at the same time as an iron source can reduce absorption by up to 80%, according to the Nutrition Desk Reference. Any beverage containing caffeine should be separated from iron-containing foods or supplements by at least one hour.

B-Vitamins
Given that caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, we end up with increased urine output. Water soluble B vitamins can become depleted due to this extra fluid loss. Caffeine also interferes with the metabolism of certain B vitamins including Thiamin (B1). Oddly enough, research shows the opposite to be true with Cobalamin (B12). Caffeine stimulates the production of stomach acid which promotes the absorption of B12.

Vitamin D
Caffeine inhibits vitamin D receptors, which limit the amount that will be absorbed. Because vitamin D is important in the absorption and use of calcium in building bone, this could also decrease bone mineral density, resulting in an increased risk for osteoporosis.

Other Vitamins and Minerals
Caffeine may reduce the absorption of manganese, zinc, and copper. It also increases the excretion of the minerals potassium, sodium, and phosphate. There is also evidence that caffeine interferes with the action of vitamin A.

Conclusion
While there are many positive effects and plenty of healthful compounds in coffee, tea, and dark chocolate, be smart about consumption. If you do find you are deficient in any of the nutrients or want to be proactive here is a supplement guide of Biotics Research products.

Mineral deficiencies can come up quick, but are easy enough to get under control. Muscle cramps like Charlie horses are a slam dunk you have a mineral deficiency. These are my top choices.

Bio-CMP™ A special electrolyte mineral blend of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, designed to support muscular function. Each Bio-CMP™ tablet contains: 200 mg of Calcium Gluconate, 100 mg of Magnesium Gluconate, 100 mg of Potassium Chloride.

Multi-Mins™ Provides a balance source of mineral chelates and whole food, phytochemically bound trace minerals, with Betaine HCI to facilitate absorption, combined with the antioxidant enzymes SOD and catalase. ***Also available in FE/CU free formula.

Ca/Mg-Zyme™ Supplies calcium citrate (300 mg) and magnesium aspartate (60 mg) in a ratio of five parts to one (per 6 tablets) together with the vegetable culture antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase.

Fe-Zyme™ A source of supplemental iron in a highly bioavailable form, combined with synergist known to assist with uptake and utilization. Note: Copper, zinc, and B12 are added to the formula because these are the cofactors known to be needed to utilize iron properly by the body. Because of its synergistic formula and the high bioavailability of Fe-Zyme™ there is a much lower incidence of the typical stomach upset experienced by most other iron supplements.

B-Vitamin deficiencies can be all over the place, head to toe. Nerve pain, fatigue, confusion, depression, numbness in hands and feet, digestive issues, anxiety, nausea, and so on, and on, and on. Depending on the severity of the deficiency, here are some choices to assist in bring up optimal B levels.

Bio-B Complex™
A high potency vitamin B complex with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and catalase. For short-term use (up to 30 days) with recovery from serious debilitation.

Bio-B 100™  A low-dose, multiple B vitamin complex supplying the phosphorylated forms of vitamins B1, B2, and B6, along with the antioxidant enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and catalase.

B6/B1 Plus Zinc Supplies active forms of these important B vitamins, along with a highly bioavailable form of the essential mineral zinc. B6 and B1 are especially important for proper function of nervous system function, and over 300 different enzymes are dependent on zinc to function properly.

When it comes to fat soluble vitamins, Biotics Research products lead the pack. Our oil-in-water emulsion process is what makes Biotics a step above the rest.

Bio-Ae-Mulsion® Bio-Ae-Mulsion Forte® Liquid, micro-emulsified vitamin A. An oil-in-water emulsion, Vitamin A oil has been dispersed into microscopic particles to aid absorption and assimilation.

Bio-D-Mulsion® and Bio-D-Mulsion Forte® both supply vitamin D3 as a microemulsion for enhanced absorption and utilization.

Bio-ADEK-Mulsion™ supplies vitamins A, D3, E, and K (as K1 and K2) in a true oil and water emulsion, resulting in enhanced bioavailability and utilization via the lymphatic system without the use of “tweens” and surfactants that may damage cell membranes and result in gut permeability.

Lastly, please don't do anything drastic like stopping your morning coffee routine! That would be going too far! Even for me! This is just a little insight to a question that comes up quite a bit. I just wanted to clear things up for the everyone.
