Female Health

Tue, 05/21/2013 - 7:16am

Cardiovascular disease is a leading killer in both men and women.  In women, however, symptoms of heart disease can be very different from those in men.  Unlike men, women often do not experience the classical symptoms of chest pain during a heart attack.  Rather, they may feel less obvious or vague sensations, including pain in the arm, neck, jaw, shoulders, or back.  Other physiological symptoms may include, stomach discomfort, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, flu-like symptoms, lightheadedness, or fatigue.[1]

More importantly, women (and men) who are obese, or who have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease should be particularly concerned if they experience these symptoms.  According to WebMD, in women, “the real trouble is in premature death and disability”[2] rather than overt death.

Consequently, women need to be more aggressive in seeking care if they experience a sudden onset of any symptom that affects their daily life.  Women also need to be assertive with their doctors if they feel they are having heart related issues, discomfort, or experiencing any correlated symptoms.

Some women experience no pain or other symptoms during a heart attack.  Only subsequent tests lead to the discovery of this “silent” attack.  At this point damage to the heart has already occurred.  These “silent” attacks pose a dangerous threat due to the heart’s reduced ability to survive another heart attack, however mild.

Exercise and dietary measures, like reducing saturated fat and foods laden with processed carbohydrates can benefit women presented with these health challenges.  Dietary inclusion of cardioprotective nutritional supplements, like CoQ10 (ubiquinone)(CoQ-Zyme 100 Plus™), and EPA and DHA from fish oil (Biomega-3™), or a combination EFA such as Optimal EFAs, can also provide vital nutrients to support the cardiovascular system.   Additional nutritional support for cardiovascular health may include a comprehensive cardiovascular multi (BioCardio-369®), along with a comprehensive vascular support product, such as VasculoSirt®.

Being vigilant in addressing symptoms and making appropriate lifestyle and dietary changes, if necessary, can be very beneficial in promoting cardiovascular health.  Added protection can also be gained by supporting the vascular integrity with antioxidant and lipid peroxidation inhibiting nutrients.

Supplement FAQ: Equi-Fem™ & PMT™

Tue, 05/21/2013 - 6:55am
Why you may need Equi-Fem™ & PMT™:

Between the onset of PMS during the early years of menstruation and the dramatic hormonal changes experienced at menopause, women in the 30-odd years in between can feel as if they have transgressed into a veritable no-man’s land.  Irritability, bloating, cramping, mood alterations, painful periods, tender breasts, fatigue, and headaches can all be a monthly burden that some women find themselves bearing.  Some women may find themselves reluctant to bring these complaints to the attention of their healthcare provider because they feel that it is just a ‘normal part of being a woman’. However, healthcare practitioners have a great tool in their toolbox designed to help address these symptoms and support their patient’s optimal health.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Equi-Fem™ & PMT™ from Biotics Research:

Biotics Research carefully formulated Equi-Fem™ to be a broad-spectrum multi-vitamin formula designed to provide support for those having fluctuating hormone levels and the symptoms that coincide with them.  In addition to providing comprehensive vitamin and mineral support, Equi-Fem™ also supplies glandular support for adrenal and pituitary hypothalamic function as well as directly targeting ovarian and uterine tissues.  It also contains bioflavonoids, FRAC®, L-Tyrosine, digestive enzymes, and the herbs Black Cohosh and Dong Quai which round off this formula and make it an excellent choice for supporting the unique health challenges of women.  Equi-Fem™ is also available in an Iron & Copper Free version, and as a glandular-free version; PMT™, for vegetarian patients.

Supplement FAQ: BioDrive®

Tue, 05/14/2013 - 6:47am
Why you may need BioDrive®:

As women age, hormonal imbalances and fluctuations may lead to fatigue and waning libido.  The topic of women’s sexual health has received little study in comparison to the plethora of studies dedicated to male sexual function.  Further compounding this lack of information are studies that indicate that female libido is far more complex than male libido, which can be primarily linked to testosterone levels. One study tested more than 1000 women over 45 years of age and found that serum levels of testosterone and other sex hormones had no link with the degree of sexual desire – ruling out the possibility of a simple diagnostic blood test for women.  Furthermore, some women may not recognize declining libido as such, and instead blame age, stress, or overwhelming fatigue for their impaired sexual function.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends BioDrive® from Biotics Research:

Formulated in conjunction with Dr. Michelle Pouliot, BioDrive® is a proprietary herbal blend, containing Rhodiola rosea extract for adrenal support, Turnera diffusa (an ancient aphrodisiac), Urtica dioica extract, an aid to limiting SHBG (sex hormone binding globulins), and Ginkgo biloba and Panax quinquefolia for increasing circulation to the extremities, including the sex organs.  In an evaluation using BioDrive®, 12 of 17 women (71%) who responded to a survey reported that they had greater interest in sex.  Of the twelve positive survey responders, ten said that they were more easily aroused, eleven indicated more pleasure with intercourse, eight reported an improved ability in achieving orgasm, and five reported increased intensity of orgasm.  Some patients on SSRI’s, which have a known effect on libido, have found BioDrive® to be very helpful.

Women’s Sexual Health Issues

Mon, 05/13/2013 - 3:20pm

When asked, over 60% of women will admit they have concerns about their sex lives. In my practice, this is most often expressed by my patients who are menopausal.  In the context of having a previously satisfying sex life, along with other menopausal changes, they’re experiencing lower libidos, weaker orgasms, and discomfort with intercourse. For some women, this can become an issue in their relationships and is affecting the quality of their life.

Female sexual response is not well explained by scientific reductionist research. Physical and emotional health is equally important to women’s sexual vitality. Hopefully, it’s no surprise that relationship discord is a major predictor for lowered female sexual responsiveness.

The menopausal transition heralds decreasing levels in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA and oxytocin. These hormones affect female desire, arousal, receptivity, pelvic vasocongestion, and orgasm. Convention treatment for menopausal sexual dysfunction often involves hormone replacement. Some of my patients choose not to use estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone therapies but want to try supplemental herbs and nutrients to support sexual health.

There are three Biotics Research products that help many women with menopausal sexual concerns. BioDrive®, DHEA and b-VITAL® often improves women’s over all energy and desire for sexual intimacy. Of course, other health issues that contribute to lowered libido and sexual response should be addressed, such as cardiac, neurological and endocrine imbalances. Also, these products shouldn’t be taken by women with breast cancer concerns because they may increase a woman’s endogenous production of hormones.

BioDrive® contains Rhodiola, American Ginseng, Damiana, Nettles root and Gingko. Rhodiola and American Ginseng are adrenal adaptogens that decrease fatigue, improve recovery from physical and emotional stress and support sexual vitality. Damiana is an aphrodisiac.  Nettles root moderates sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) that allows for increased free hormone activity. Gingko is a peripheral vascular dilator that improves pelvic blood flow.

DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone, is an adrenal hormone that serves many physiological purposes, including the production of estrogen and testosterone. DHEA levels drop precipitously with menopause. A DHEA level above 200 mcg/dL appears to be necessary for women’s libido.

b-VITAL® contains Peruvian Maca and Elk Velvet Antler (EVA).  Maca has been shown to reduce sexual dysfunction in menopausal women without changing Estrogen, FSH, LH or SHBG. EVA has been used for centuries as an aphrodisiac. In men, it can increase testosterone levels though I haven’t found research showing it to have the same effect for woman. Woman in my practice do report DHEA with b-VITAL® seems to improve their sex drive.

Women’s sexual vitality is marvelously complex and multidimensional. Good sex requires good sleep, energy, mood, health and relationships. From the women in my practice, I’ve seen that BioDrive®, DHEA, and b-VITAL® can help.

Nutrient Needs Increase During Pregnancy – Especially Iodine

Tue, 05/07/2013 - 2:15am

It is an established fact that vitamin and mineral needs increase during pregnancy. The increased need for calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc for fetal growth and development is well recognized. The need for B-complex vitamins, especially B-12 and folic acid also increase during pregnancy. Folic acid deficiencies during pregnancy can lead to neural tube defect in the fetus. A vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women has a negative impact on growth and development of the fetus. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in fish oil, is import in fetal development.

One mineral often overlooked during pregnancy, however is iodine. A 2012 press release by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “Iodine levels border on insufficiency in women of childbearing age” – women 20-29 years of age. The CDC press release goes on to say; “This age group had iodine levels that were just above iodine insufficiency. The young women also had the lowest iodine levels among any age group of women. Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones that regulate human growth and development.  Iodine deficiency disorders include mental retardation, hypothyroidism, goiter, cretinism, and varying degrees of other growth and developmental abnormalities.  Iodine is especially important in women during childbearing years to ensure the best possible brain development of the fetus during pregnancy.”

A report titled “The effects of iodine deficiency in pregnancy and infancy”, published in the July ,2012 issue of Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol states “controlled studies have demonstrated that iodine supplementation before or during early pregnancy eliminates new cases of cretinism, increases birth weight, reduces rates of perinatal and infant mortality and generally increases developmental scores in young children by 10-20%. The report goes on to say “Two meta-analyses have estimated that iodine-deficient populations experience a mean reduction in IQ of 12-13.5 points.”

It makes sense for women who are pregnant or who want to become pregnant to consider supplementing their diet with a prenatal formula designed to provide the nutrients in greatest demand during pregnancy. Biotics Research Pre-Natal Packs provide a broad spectrum of the vitamins and minerals, including iodine, in great demand by the mother and fetus during pregnancy.  Pre-Natal Packs also contain fish oil, as a source of DHA, an important factor in fetal development. If you are concerned about your iodine status, you may want to consider either blood or urine spot test for iodine or the iodine loading test. Consider the addition Iodizyme HP with the guidance of your healthcare practitioner when an iodine deficiency is identified.

Supplement FAQ: BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM®

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 3:03pm
Why you may need BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM®:

For women, the aging process may not only mean the acquisition of laugh lines and grey hairs, but it may be associated with often debilitating symptoms and physical changes, commonly including: fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, mood alterations, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, musculoskeletal changes, altered metabolism, and irregular or absent menstrual periods.  To further complicate matters, there is not a universal treatment for addressing these indications because no two women share identical symptoms nor do they respond similarly to existing therapies.  For this reason, your healthcare provider may choose to categorize each woman’s complaints and address them individually for a unique and personalized approach.  Dr. Michelle Pouliot, in conjunction with Biotics Research, has formulated and clinically evaluated key products for the support of women’s health, including  BioPause-AM® and BioPause-PM®.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM® from Biotics Research:

Biotics Research’s line of women’s products are complex herbal formulations designed to support healthy female functioning.  They are effective individually or in combination.

BioPause-AM® is designed to address hot flashes and their associate palpitations often experienced during menopause. The adaptogenic properties of BioPause-AM® assist with fatigue and menstrual irregularities that are often reported by women. Clinically, women report less anxiety, more energy, and improved daytime mental clarity as a result of taking BioPause-AM®.

BioPause-PM® is formulated to assist women in getting the rest they need during their transitional phase of life. BioPause-PM® addresses such complaints as night sweats, anxiety and restlessness that often preclude a restful and rejuvenating sleep. Clinically, women taking BioPause-PM® report a reduction of anxiety and improved sleep quality.

Supplement FAQ: Bio-Allay®

Tue, 04/30/2013 - 11:07am
Why you may need Bio-Allay®:

It has been said that our modern society can be termed an “Inflammation Nation”, with the vast majority of people living with some type of physical discomfort. Bio-Allay® contains a proprietary combination of three unique herbal extracts; White Willow (Salix alba), Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytumprocumbens), and Boswellia (Boswellia serrata gum) which collectively support comfort levels and promote enhanced activities of daily living. White Willow bark was the original source for the salicylates needed for the chemical manufacture of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), but clinicians should not be remiss in believing that White Willow is synonymous with acetylsalicylic acid. White Willow salicyclates have demonstrated inhibition of COX-2 transcription, a feature not noted in acetylsalicyclic acid. Additionally, anticoagulant and antiprostaglandin actions associated with acetylsalicyclic acid are not present with White Willow extract. Devil’s Claw has a long history of use for the support of musculoskeletal complaints.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Bio-Allay® from Biotics Research:

Over 12 clinical trials have been published on its use and all have found Devil’s Claw to be clinically valuable. Boswellia shows anti-inflammatory actions via the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, with no apparent effect on cyclooxygenase. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Boswellia was able to reduce swelling while increasing comfort, joint flexion, and walking distance in patients with wear and tear damage of the knees. Bio-Allay® is another fine example of leading-edge nutritional supplementation available exclusively from Biotics Research Corporation. The benefits from taking Bio-Allay® can often be noted within the first few doses, making it an excellent product to use with patients experiencing physical discomfort. Bio-Allay® is a safe and natural alternative to over-the-counter products, however it should be avoided by patients with a known sensitivity to aspirin or salicylates. As always, Biotics Research Corporation brings you “The Best of Science and Nature.

Management of Pain and Inflammation

Tue, 04/23/2013 - 2:53pm

As one of the immune system’s response to infection or irritation, inflammation is the body’s means of eradicating the offending culprit. It is a multifaceted biological response of the vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, in which a complex innate cascade is initiated. This innate cascade is both cellular and exudative in nature, and is a protective mechanism by which the body attempts to remove the injurious stimuli, as well as to initiate the healing process. Although protective, a chronic or unceasing inflammatory response may eventually lead to a host of associated disease pathogenesis, including among others, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontal disease. Therefore, limiting or “down-regulating” the inflammatory response may be desirable in certain situations.

As a part of the healing process, inflammation is normally closely regulated by the body. However, as noted above, excessive inflammation may result in an “inflammatory-fibroproliferative response” which can in turn generate unwanted health consequences, including advanced atherosclerotic lesions.[1] Dietary intake can also exacerbate the inflammatory response, especially when the diet consists of pro-inflammatory foods, including simple sugars and high-fat foods. These foods are well recognized as components that promote inflammation. Research has clearly demonstrated that n-6 fatty acids enhance carcinogenesis, whereas n-3 fatty acids are inhibitory to carcinogenesis. Consequently, to accelerate the healing process and to diminish inflammatory responses these type foods should be avoided. Likewise the omega-6 family of fatty acids should also be reduced or eliminated from the diet to the extent possible, as these fatty acids are inflammation promoters. In particular; linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) from the n-6 family should be limited in the diet as these fatty acids contribute to an inflammatory state. LA increases inflammation by a number of mechanisms, including the activation of NF-KappaB.[2] When acute inflammation becomes chronic, tissue healing cannot occur.[3]

Six of the ten leading causes of death in Americans are coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis,[4][5][6] all of which have been previously described as inflammatory in nature. A variety of dietary factors play a significant role in creating a “diet-induced proinflammatory state”. As previously mentioned degenerative inflammatory diseases are promoted by dietary imbalances.5 A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and the proper fats can prevent a host of proinflammatory degenerative diseases; now a well accepted fact. Nearly all degenerative diseases have the same underlying biochemical etiology, that is, a diet-induced proinflammatory state. Optimal EFAs® provides a blend of essential fats in ratios deemed optimal.[7]

Natural anti-inflammatory agents such as bromelain, papain, trypsin and alpha-chymotrypsin, such as that contained in Intenzyme Forte™ can aide in reducing the excess inflammation correlated to pain perception. Other agents, such as NF KappaB inhibitors may be utilized in conjunction with Intenzyme Forte™ to further downreguate the inflammatory process. KappArest™ contains a number of these inhibitors, including tumeric (curcuminoids), boswellia, ginger and rosemary. In addition to these, analgesic ingredients, such as those in Bio-Allay® can also assist in pain modulation for these patients. These analgesic compounds include White Willow, Devil’s Claw, and Boswellia. Furthermore, flavonoid compounds are very beneficial mediators of the release of proinflammatory cytokines.[8] BioFCTS™ offers a concentrated source of flavonoids, including green tea, quercetin and vitamin C.

End the Pain and Suffering

Tue, 04/16/2013 - 9:17am

There are two types of pain…acute and chronic.  Then there are basically two sub classes of pain.  Nociceptive pain which senses temperature, vibration, stretch, and chemicals released from damaged cells. This can come from Somatic (musculoskeletal, including connective tissue) or Visceral receptors (body organs). The other sub class being non-nociceptive which is nerve pain and sympathetic nervous system pain.  In all cases there is some type of inflammation and as a health care practitioner, we have to admit that there is another place pain can come from - the brain and emotions. Pain is caused by attention, perception, thoughts, beliefs, emotion, psychiatric, life orientation, values, social role, health, and a variety of facets of culture.  So how do we treat pain?  Do we incorporate all of those factors into a comprehensive package, tailored to fit the particular patient?

In the cell walls, a small protein is made called a cytokine. These molecules are used to communicate between cells during any type of immune system response. There are two types of cytokines…pro inflammatory and anti inflammatory. In most cases, the average patient has more pro then anti inflammatory. The healthcare practitioner’s job should be twofold if possible; put out the fire and find out what caused it.

By process of elimination, the easiest issue is a physical one. Was there an injury? Recent or old? Is the area still painful or hot? It is importnat to note here, if they are chronically inflamed, the concept of ice for only 24-48 hours goes out the window! If they have an acidic pH, if they have had a Pro Inflammatory diet, if they are high in Histamine content in the blood, 24-48 hours will not do much for them. Is there an undiagnosed issue reflecting into the involved areas as well? This will lead to continuing instability and inflammation.

Prolonged problems involving the function of inflammatory cytokines is often refered to as a cytokine storm. The communication and balance between immune cells and the cytokines present is interrupted and the rate of production accelerates. This can lead to serious health issues!  These results have the effect of exacerbating the ill effects of a condition, rather than helping the immune system deal effectively with whatever is ailing the body. There are several common signs that indicate that a storm is present, including fever, body aches and nausea, along with stronger symptoms that are related directly to the ailment itself.

Now for the simple steps to start. Get them off of an inflammatory diet. Get them off a high histamine diet. Research any structural, soft tissue or visceral complaints from a “functional” as well as “pathologic” point of view. Start them on the Easy 3 Step Bio-Detoxification program. Decrease pain and inflammation with Intenzyme Forte™KappArest™ and Bromelain Plus CLA™ (on an empty stomach). Then do a metabolic clearing using Bio-Detox Packs™, NutriClear® and Whey Protein Isolate. For regeneration and tissue repair, use ProMulti-Plus® or Amino Sport™Optimal EFAs®, BioDoph-7 Plus® and ChondroSamine Plus®.

Supplement FAQ: Optimal EFAs Caps®

Tue, 04/16/2013 - 7:23am
Why you may need Optimal EFAs Caps®:

The consumption of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) is absolutely required for optimal health. In addition to being required for the formation of cell membranes, EFAs are essential for cerebral and neurological development and functioning. EFAs are also required for the production of hormone-like substances called Eicosanoids which are collectively responsible for regulating blood pressure and blood viscosity, along with immune and inflammatory responses. EFA imbalances are very common in modern societies, particularly for/in those whose diet is over-reliant on grains or in those who consume an abundance of processed foods containing artificial ingredients or hydrogenated fats, in other words the Standard American Diet (SAD). EFA deficits generally occur in combination, therefore supplementation with a balanced combination of EFAs makes sense. Mood and memory alterations, neurological issues, high blood pressure, coagulation issues, altered cholesterol panels, slow wound healing, impaired growth, immune and mental deficiencies, and poor vision have all been clinically associated with EFA deficiency. Deficiencies are also associated with a wide variety of dermatological complaints – everything from dry or itchy skin, eczema, psoriasis, hemorrhagic, scaly or idiopathic dermatitis, folliculitis, skin atrophy, and edema. Children, seniors, and those consuming altered or unbalanced diets are especially prone to EFA deficiency.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Optimal EFAs Caps® from Biotics Research:

Optimal EFAs Caps® was strategically formulated with noted researcher and author, Dr. Alex Vasquez, DC, ND, DO to provide an ideal balance of Omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids. Supplied as a unique blend of the highest quality fish, flaxseed, and borage oils that are tested for purity, collectively they provide ALA, EPA, DHA, GLA, and Oleic Acid in ratios that are optimal. Available as easy to take capsules or in a naturally flavored liquid formula, Optimal EFAs® are available exclusively through Biotics Research. As always, you can count on Biotics Research to offer superior nutritional products supplying “The Best of Science and Nature”.

Supplement FAQ: KappArest™

Tue, 04/09/2013 - 9:37am
Why you may need KappArest™:

Pain is one of the many things we humans share. And though pain may be subjective (we cannot judge each others level of it), inflammation is not. Inflammation is our body’s response to injury, real or perceived.

The inflammatory cascade is triggered by environmental stimuli such as injury, food or environmental allergens, viral infections, exposure to toxins and emotional stress, or poor diet. This leads to the activation of something called NF-KappaB, a protein complex that acts as an intracellular “amplifier” to promote the production of direct mediators of inflammation. These include such compounds as cytokines, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, nitric oxide and free radicals. If NF-KappaB is left unchecked, it can lead to pain, inflammation and even insulin resistance, and cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders. Unfortunately, inflammation has become prevalent in our society, largely sue to the pro-inflammatory nature of the Standard American Diet (SAD) and the nutritional deficits resulting from it, our high stress lifestyles, and constant environmental insults.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends KappArest™ from Biotics Research:

Formulated in conjunction with Alex Vasquez, DC, ND, DO, KappArest™ was designed to inhibit the production of NF-KappaB. KappArest™ has been shown to have a positive impact on inflammatory mediators, and has demonstrated it ability to modulate inflammatory responses. Optimal EFAs® and Bio-D-Mulsion Forte® are two additional products available from Biotics Research Corporation that are commonly used in conjunction with KappArest™ for their synergistic action in downregulating pro-inflammatory mediators that impact systemic inflammation. Vitamin D Deficiency and Pain

Tue, 04/09/2013 - 9:28am

There is mounting evidence in medical literature to support the link between Vitamin D deficiency and pain.

The December, 2003, Mayo Clinic Proceedings listed Vitamin D deficiency as one possible cause of persistent and vague musculoskeletal pain. An editorial in the same issue, titled “Vitamin D Deficiency: What a Pain It Is” presents the mechanism by which vitamin D deficiency leads to pain. Dr. Alex Vasquez summarized this mechanism in a November 2004, Nashua, NH lecture as follows “…1) vitamin D deficiency causes a reduction in calcium absorption, 2) production of parathyroid (PTH) hormone is increased to maintain blood calcium levels, 3) PTH results in increased urinary excretion of phosphorus, which leads to hypophosphatemia, 4) insufficient calcium phosphate results in deposition of unmineralized collagen matrix on the endosteal (inside) and periosteal (outside) of bones, 5) when the collagen matrix hydrates and swells, it causes pressure on the sensory-innervated periosteum resulting in pain.”

Since early 2000, numerous studies linking Vitamin D and pain have been published. Below are three studies I found to be very interesting.

In September 2010, the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care published a study on Vitamin D status in patients with musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and headache. It was a cross-sectional descriptive study in a multi-ethnic general practice in Norway. A total of 572 patients referred by a general practitioner (GP) for an examination of hypovitaminosis D who reported musculoskeletal pain, headache, or fatigue were included in the study. Both genders and all ages were included. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 58% of patients. One-third of ethnic Norwegians had low vitamin D, while 83% of patients from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia had low vitamin D with minimal seasonal variation of levels. One in two women from these countries had a vitamin D level below 25 nmol/L. Mean vitamin D level was lower in patients with headaches compared with patients with other symptoms. Some 15% of patients with low (< 50 nmol/L) vitamin D levels reported headaches, compared with 5% of those with normal vitamin D levels. Overall, the study showed a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients with non-specific musculoskeletal pain, headache, or fatigue.

An October 2010 study published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases looked at the association between nonspecific skeletal pain and vitamin D deficiency. In patients with nonspecific skeletal pain the mean 25-(OH) Vitamin D was significantly lower and the proportion of 25-(OH) Vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher compared with controls. There was a significantly positive association between 25-(OH) Vitamin D deficiency and skeletal pain. The strength of association varied across the groups with strongest association observed with leg pain, followed by arthralgia and widespread pain. The results of this study indicated a positive association of vitamin D deficiency with a variety of nonspecific bone pain, particularly in women.

A study published in the March 2012 issue of Pain Management looked at Vitamin D Deficiency in Women with Fibromyalgia in Saudi Arabia. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among patients with fibromyalgia in a neurology clinic in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The study was done at the neurology clinic of Bugshan Hospital, Jeddah, KSA, from January to April 2011. Thirty female patients were diagnosed with fibromyalgia according to new clinical fibromyalgia diagnostic criteria; their serum vitamin D levels were screened. Vitamin D deficiency is defined as <20 ng/mL, vitamin D insufficiency is defined as 21–29 ng/mL, and vitamin D sufficiency is equal to or >30 ng/mL. Thirty female patients were included in the study. The mean age was 34.56 ± 8.1 years. Mean vitamin D level was 4.76 ± 1.46 ng/mL. A significant negative correlation between vitamin D level and widespread pain index was found. Thirty percent of the patients were Saudi Arabian of whom 100% were veiled; 70% were non-Saudi Arabian of whom 47.6% were veiled and 52.4% wore long pants and/or full sleeved clothes. Vitamin D deficiency was equally prevalent among veiled (4.77 ± 1.37 ng/mL) and nonveiled (4.75 ± 1.68 ng/mL). Treatment with high-dose vitamin D resulted in clinical improvement in all patients. Effective treatment with high-dose vitamin D could lead to resolution of almost all symptoms.

It would make sense for those suffering persistent and vague musculoskeletal pain to check their Vitamin D status. If Vitamin D supplementation is needed, consider Bio-D-Mulsion® or Bio-D-Mulsion Forte®, the most convenient and cost effective way to raise your Vitamin D levels.

Supplement FAQ: Intenzyme Forte™

Tue, 04/02/2013 - 2:52pm
Why you may need Intenzyme Forte™:

Health researchers are continually discovering that inflammation and its effects are at the root of many health problems.  In fact, it can be argued that most chronic health challenges involve some degree of inflammation and inflammatory markers.  But acknowledging inflammation and addressing it are two very different entities.  Since inflammation can be caused from such a wide variety of factors – everything from physical wear and tear, diet, environmental factors, genetics, and even local or systemic allergies, it can be difficult to find an easy way to address it.  Intenzyme Forte is a potent source of both plant and animal based enzymes that are an effective combination to break down the aberrant proteins associated with inflammation, hence the term “proteolytic enzymes”.  Proteolytic enzymes are an outstanding and highly effective remedy for systemic or localized inflammation and discomfort such as muscle soreness.  The key, however, is that in order to benefit from enzymes proteolytic actions; it must be taken on an empty stomach. If taken with food, the enzyme will work as a digestive aid instead.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Intenzyme Forte™ from Biotics Research:

Intenzyme Forte™ is a broad spectrum nutritional supplement capable of exerting influence over a variety of physiological and biochemical mechanisms, including: inflammatory processes, numerous pathways of protein metabolism, hormone processing, digestive processes, food sensitivities, immune system support, and healthy circulatory system support.  Intenzyme Forte™ also has the ability to break down mucous secretions as well. For over 30 years, thousands of healthcare practitioners have relied on the safe, effective, and reliable results that Intenzyme Forte™ has to offer.  As always, you can count on Biotics Research to offer superior nutritional products that supply “The Best of Science and Nature”.

Vitamin D Levels and Allergies

Mon, 03/25/2013 - 8:47am

A number of recent studies show a relationship between Vitamin D levels and allergies. I found the three studies below to be most interesting.

A study published in the May 2011 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology tested the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) deficiency (<15 ng/mL) and insufficiency (15-29 ng/mL) and allergic sensitization measured by serum IgE levels in a US nationally representative sample of 3136 children and adolescents and 3454 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006. The study found that, in children and adolescents, allergic sensitization to 11 of 17 allergens was more common in those with 25(OH)D deficiency. The study concluded vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher levels of IgE sensitization in children and adolescents.

Another study in the December 2012 issue of Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology examined the evidence of the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and childhood asthma and allergies. The authors looked at studies over the past 2 years, both cross-sectional and prospective, that have investigated the effects of vitamin D on the inception and severity of asthma and allergies. Most, but not all, studies have shown that low vitamin D levels increase the risk for asthma and allergies. Results from small trials of short duration suggest that vitamin D supplementation decreases severity of eczema and decreases the risk for asthma exacerbations.

A third study published in the June 2011 issue of the European Annals of Clinical Immunology titled “Is high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency evidence for asthma and allergy risks?” looked at the association between vitamin D and asthma among children, the difference in level of vitamin D in asthmatic children and control, and the effect of vitamin D on atopy markers. The study found serum vitamin D levels were lower in asthmatic than control and that Vitamin D deficiency was higher among children with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, acute urticaria, and food allergy. In addition, vitamin D deficiency was associated with IgE atopy markers in asthmatic children more than controls.

Bases on the studies above, it would make sense for allergy suffers to check their Vitamin D status. If Vitamin D supplementation is needed, consider Bio-D-Mulsion® or Bio-D-Mulsion Forte®, the most convenient and cost effective way to raise your Vitamin D levels.

Allergies

Tue, 03/19/2013 - 1:28pm

As we all know, an allergy involves an exaggerated  or hyper response of a hyper sensitive immune system.A defining premise of this school of thought is that allergic symptoms are always triggered by a protein.(Keep this in mind for later)

The immune system is the body’s organized defense mechanism against foreign invaders, particularly infections.Allergens are substances that are foreign to the body and can cause an allergic reaction.IgE is the allergy antibody.

Allergies can develop at any age.Your risk of developing allergies is related to your parents’ allergy history according to Western Medicine belief systems .Examples of allergens include pollens, dust mite,,trees,mold/mildew danders, and foods. It is estimated that 50 million North Americans are affected by allergic conditions.Asthma is a common symptom of an allergic reaction. The number of cases of asthma has doubled over the last 20 years IgE is overproduced in response to cat dander, pollens, and other harmless allergens.  (Harmless to who? Certainly not the people suffering!)

Where are the Allergens? Everywhere…Allergens may be inhaled, ingested (eaten or swallowed), applied to the skin, or injected into the body, like medications or insect stings. There are basically 4 types-Airborne,Ingested,Contact or Injection. We will concentrate on the first two.

In the Air-Breathing can be hazardous to your health if you are allergic. Aside from oxygen, the air contains a wide variety of particles; some toxic, some infectious, and some “innocuous,” including allergens. The usual diseases that result from airborne allergens are hay fever, asthma, and conjunctivitis. The following allergens are usually technically harmless, but can trigger allergic reactions when inhaled by sensitized individuals.Pollens: trees, grasses, and/or weeds,Dust mites,Animal proteins: dander, skin, and/or urine,Mold spores, and even insect parts.

For example, here on the East Coast,In New York-we were hit by Hurricane Sandy,a Nor’Easter, severely fluctuating hot and cold Weather,Snow Storm Nemo that dumped 2-3 feet of Snow, the Holidays and “Flu” Season all in the space of about 4 months. People are still suffering from Flu like and Allergy like symptoms as well as all kinds of upper respiratory airborne symptoms from all of the weather and it’s effects dumped into the air !!! And of course we are told tisi is the worst Flu season they ahve ever seen !

In What We Ingest- Food  reactions may begin with tongue or throat swelling and may be followed by tingling, nausea, bowel cramps.diarrhea, or stomach cramps. Nasal breathing difficulties or skin reactions may also be seen. Please keep in mind-the reaction doesn’t have to be as severe as eating a strawberry or peanut by accident and you are rushed to the hospital.

The two main ingestible groups that are  are Foods and Drugs (when taken by mouth), for example, antibiotics and aspirin.  The IgE antibody is responsible for allergic reactions. IgE antibodies are present in everyone. In a properly functioning immune system, the genetics contain enough information to enable the lymphocytes to distinguish between threatening and non-threatening proteins.

In an allergic person’s immune system, the lymphocytes can’t tell that the protein ingested as part of a meal containing shellfish isn’t invading the body.(Very important fact to keep in mind !) The B-cells of an allergic person, cause the production of large quantities of IgE antibodies that attach themselves to mast cells and basophils throughout the body. This is known as the sensitizing exposure.

Mast cell – a type of cell containing histamine and other allergy mediators instrumental in the allergic response. Basophil – a white blood cell containing histamine and other allergy mediators. Histamine – a chemical present mainly in mast cells that, when released, causes many of the symptoms of allergy

Injected into Our Body-  allergy shots/vaccines,medication,venom,bug bites/hormones

Touching Our Skin -allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin that is caused by a local allergic reaction. The majority of these localized skin reactions do not involve IgE, but are caused by cells of inflammation. The rash produced is similar to that of a Poison Ivy rash.Touching or rubbing a substance to which you were previously sensitized can trigger a skin rash.

Western Science has these suggestions to deal with allergies-.Avoidance-Medication-Immunotherapy.

So what are you gonna do on your end? First HCL Plus™ or Gastrazyme™ becuase if the body is seeing it as undigested protiens, you will need more acid and GI function to break down the “hamburger” you are breathing in.The Immune system is on HAYWIRE mode,so C,D, E, B12 and Co Q 10 are all imperative to start to clean up or inhibit the IgE response. Then add Immunozyme Forte™ and HistoPlex® or GSH Plus™ and the most obvious one: Cytozyme-AD™. Finally, get them off all high Histamine and Inflammatory foods and that is really going to be difficult—Ice Cream season is coming!

The rebuild the Immune system with ImmuAnother important contributor to the rising prevalence of allergies may be nutrition. Countries with high rates of asthma and allergic rhinitis have lower blood levels of certain vitamins, including vitamins C and D.  Other nutrients that may be beneficial to allergy sufferers include vitamin E (shown to reduce IgE levels in humans), Coenzyme Q10 (found to be low in 40% of patients with allergies according to a small study conducted by Folkers and Pfeiffer), Vitamin B12 (shown to reduce physiologic manifestations of allergy in ovalbumin-sensitized mice), and Bioflavonoids (shown to stabilize mast cell membranes and reduce the liberation of histamine). – See more at: http://blog.bioticsresearch.com/2012/03/05/pollen-counts-will-soon-be-rising-its-time-to-think-about-allergies

Supplement FAQ: IPS®

Tue, 03/19/2013 - 1:26pm
Why you may need IPS®:

IPS® is a comprehensive Intestinal Permeability Support supplement. With a total surface area larger than the size of a tennis court, the intestine represents the major interface between the body and the environment. This huge area is designed to assure efficient uptake of nutrients and paradoxically, it must simultaneously exclude many substances such as microorganisms, toxins, food allergens, and endotoxins in order to maintain health. As the largest immune organ with a full compliment of immune cells (T cells, B cells, mast cells and macrophages), the intestine secretes large amounts of a specific antibody, secretory IgA (sIgA), which binds specifically to antigens and microorganisms and prevents their uptake in the gut.  Imbalanced immune function can alter intestinal permeability due to inflammation, decreased sIgA, stress, and decreased nutritional status. When the intestinal epithelium becomes injured or compromised, leaks or gaps in the mucosa may develop.  These gaps may allow allergens and foreign proteins to leak into the bloodstream, and allergic symptoms or chronic health challenges may result.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends IPS® from Biotics Research:

IPS® is a unique formula that was designed to address the specific issue of altered intestinal permeability, supplying a comprehensive array of nutritional factors to support healthy intestinal function.  L-Glutamine is an amino acid which plays a major role in the health of the immune system and the digestive tract.  D-Glucosamine sulfate is an amino sugar which is a key building block in connective tissue and the lining of the intestines.  In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, glutathione levels are linked with healthy (anti) aging and proper immune function.  Gamma oryzanol supports the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract and helps balance pro-inflammatory mediators.  Tillandsia  helps to support healthy intestinal mucosa, and Jerusalem artichoke is a fructooligosaccaride which has been shown to promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.  Collectively, the components of IPS not only promote gastrointestinal health, but they also are beneficial to overall immune system function.  As always, you can count on Biotics Research Corporation to offer superior nutritional products supplying “The Best of Science and Nature”.

Supplement FAQ: IAG™

Mon, 03/11/2013 - 7:43am
Why you may need IAG™:

Arabinogalactan is a unique polysaccharide from the cell wall of several different plants, but it is especially prevalent in the inner bark of the larch tree (a variety of pine tree). It has long been noted for its use as an effective prebiotic and dietary fiber, but more and more studies are showing that it deserves mention for its ability to promote the health of the immune system. It has been demonstrated to have immune modulating effects and it also stimulates natural killer (NK) cell activity, which has been linked in medical literature to be physiologically decreased in a number of chronic conditions, particularly those of viral or autoimmune natures. Pediatricians frequently recommend arabinogalactans to provide targeted dietary support for children who have frequent episodes of otitis media.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends IAG™ from Biotics Research:

Despite the fact that it is derived from trees, IAG™ is a mild, slightly sweet tasting powder.  It readily dissolves into water or juice and is a convenient choice for a wide variety of people, including young children and seniors who may be prohibited from taking pills or immune supportive herbal formulas.  In fact, IAG™ is so palatable, that if a child doesn’t see it being mixed into their juice – they usually won’t be able to detect its presence. Each bottle of IAG™ from Biotics Research Corporation contains 50 servings of arabinogalactans, making it both convenient and economical.  Once again, Biotics Research Corporation brings you “The Best of Science and Nature.
