Supplement FAQ: Equi-Fem™ & PMT™

Biotics Blog - Mon, 05/14/2012 - 2:13pm
Why you may need Equi-Fem™ & PMT™:

Between the onset of PMS during the early years of menstruation and the dramatic hormonal changes experienced at menopause, women in the 30-odd years in between can feel as if they have transgressed into a veritable no-man’s land.  Irritability, bloating, cramping, mood alterations, painful periods, tender breasts, fatigue, and headaches can all be a monthly burden that some women find themselves bearing.  Some women may find themselves reluctant to bring these complaints to the attention of their healthcare provider because they feel that it is just a ‘normal part of being a woman’. However, healthcare practitioners have a great tool in their toolbox designed to help address these symptoms and support their patient’s optimal health.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Equi-Fem™ & PMT™ from Biotics Research:

Biotics Research carefully formulated Equi-Fem™ to be a broad-spectrum multi-vitamin formula designed to provide support for those having fluctuating hormone levels and the symptoms that coincide with them.  In addition to providing comprehensive vitamin and mineral support, Equi-Fem™ also supplies glandular support for adrenal and pituitary hypothalamic function as well as directly targeting ovarian and uterine tissues.  It also contains bioflavonoids, FRAC®, L-Tyrosine, digestive enzymes, and the herbs Black Cohosh and Dong Quai which round off this formula and make it an excellent choice for supporting the unique health challenges of women.  Equi-Fem™ is also available in an Iron & Copper Free version, and as a glandular-free version; PMT™, for vegetarian patients.

Women’s Health…Women’s Choices

Biotics Blog - Mon, 05/14/2012 - 1:57pm

As a naturopathic physician practicing women’s health for the past 20 years, I’ve watched my patients be overwhelmed, excited, or conflicted by the amount of “medical” advice that comes their way. From self-help books to health food store free magazines, research articles quoted in newspapers to on line advice and Dr. Oz, women are being told what supplements, diets, drugs, tests and exercises are essential for them to be happy, healthy, and hopefully forever young.

What patients need most is competent diagnosis then respectful individualization of their care. An example from my practice would be a treatment approach for three women with migraine headaches. One young woman has premenstrual migraines, another has peri-menopausal premenstrual migraines, and the third woman has migraines that began with taking the birth control pill. Conventionally, all these women would be recommended to take a prescription medication, such as Imetrex or Relpax. From an integrative perspective, while all of these women would probably benefit from a multiple vitamin and magnesium supplementation, my advice would differ according to their health history and headache etiology.

Younger women with premenstrual migraines often respond to increased intake of B vitamins, especially riboflavin. If she also has severe menstrual cramps, Evening Primrose Oil (500mg bid) often helps with the dysmenorrheal as well as the headaches. Perimenopausal migraines often require hormonal balancing, though I’ve seen the most improvement for women who undergo a detox protocol as well. I highly recommend the Biotics Research 10-Day BioDetox Kit. Oral contraceptives are a common cause of migraines. The best choice if the birth control pill is causing migraines is for women to choose a different method of contraception. If that’s not an option, then in addition to B vitamin supplementation, a botanical formula containing Petasites hybridus “purple butterbur” can be effective for these types of migraines.

With many women’s health concerns (PMS, peri-menopause, menopause, osteoporosis, weight gain, and sexual health issues), comprehensive care addresses the cause but also focuses on treating the individual.

Supplement FAQ: BioDrive®

Biotics Blog - Tue, 05/08/2012 - 1:23pm
Why you may need BioDrive®:

As women age, hormonal imbalances and fluctuations may lead to fatigue and waning libido.  The topic of women’s sexual health has received little study in comparison to the plethora of studies dedicated to male sexual function.  Further compounding this lack of information are studies that indicate that female libido is far more complex than male libido, which can be primarily linked to testosterone levels. One study tested more than 1000 women over 45 years of age and found that serum levels of testosterone and other sex hormones had no link with the degree of sexual desire – ruling out the possibility of a simple diagnostic blood test for women.  Furthermore, some women may not recognize declining libido as such, and instead blame age, stress, or overwhelming fatigue for their impaired sexual function.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends BioDrive® from Biotics Research:

Formulated in conjunction with Dr. Michelle Pouliot, BioDrive® is a proprietary herbal blend, containing Rhodiola rosea extract for adrenal support, Turnera diffusa (an ancient aphrodisiac), Urtica dioica extract, an aid to limiting SHBG (sex hormone binding globulins), and Ginkgo biloba and Panax quinquefolia for increasing circulation to the extremities, including the sex organs.  In an evaluation using BioDrive®, 12 of 17 women (71%) who responded to a survey reported that they had greater interest in sex.  Of the twelve positive survey responders, ten said that they were more easily aroused, eleven indicated more pleasure with intercourse, eight reported an improved ability in achieving orgasm, and five reported increased intensity of orgasm.  Some patients on SSRI’s, which have a known effect on libido, have found BioDrive® to be very helpful.

Supplement FAQ: BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM®

Biotics Blog - Tue, 05/01/2012 - 2:20pm
Why you may need BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM®:

For women, the aging process may not only mean the acquisition of laugh lines and grey hairs, but it may be associated with often debilitating symptoms and physical changes, commonly including: fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, mood alterations, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, musculoskeletal changes, altered metabolism, and irregular or absent menstrual periods.  To further complicate matters, there is not a universal treatment for addressing these indications because no two women share identical symptoms nor do they respond similarly to existing therapies.  For this reason, your healthcare provider may choose to categorize each woman’s complaints and address them individually for a unique and personalized approach.  Dr. Michelle Pouliot, in conjunction with Biotics Research, has formulated and clinically evaluated key products for the support of women’s health, including  BioPause-AM® and BioPause-PM®.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends BioPause-AM® & BioPause-PM® from Biotics Research:

Biotics Research’s line of women’s products are complex herbal formulations designed to support healthy female functioning.  They are effective individually or in combination.

BioPause-AM® is designed to address hot flashes and their associate palpitations often experienced during menopause. The adaptogenic properties of BioPause-AM® assist with fatigue and menstrual irregularities that are often reported by women. Clinically, women report less anxiety, more energy, and improved daytime mental clarity as a result of taking BioPause-AM®.

BioPause-PM® is formulated to assist women in getting the rest they need during their transitional phase of life. BioPause-PM® addresses such complaints as night sweats, anxiety and restlessness that often preclude a restful and rejuvenating sleep. Clinically, women taking BioPause-PM® report a reduction of anxiety and improved sleep quality.

Poor Health and Stress

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/30/2012 - 11:39am

I have noticed over time, one of the leading factors of poor health is STRESS.  The combination of SUGAR and STRESS is devastating!  I am familiar with one of the very common statements today as many of you are; “comfort food”.  The definition for “comfort food” for many includes massive amounts of carbohydrates and I recognize chocolate as one of the most widespread items in the mix of foods that appear to “calm the nerves”.  The desire and passion for the little dark bean creates an addictive pattern of high and lows; the sugar and chocolate combination create chaos in the body after the calmness settles down.

Do you crave sugar?  How about chocolate?  Chocolate consumption has become one of the most recent media driven health food that has been peddled off as a source of anti-oxidants and being good for you.  Ladies, I can tell you from my experience that chocolate and sugar slowly drain adrenal gland function.  The adrenal glands are very important glands known to support optimal immune system and hormonal health.  The more sugar and chocolate you consume over time, the more exhausted you will become and your emotions will be on a roller coaster ride of fast and furious then “BAM”, the brakes go on and you are in a low of lows.  You will develop menopausal symptoms sooner than your “sugar free” friends; and I am not talking about Splenda® or Nutra Sweet® either.  I recommend ADB5-Plus™ from Biotics Research; 2 upon rising and 2 at noon.

So what do you do to stop those cravings?  I have noticed that the individuals who really crave sugar tend to be mineral deficient and crave the sugar to satisfy the mineral need; their body is confused and they continue to eat sugar which only compounds the problem.   I have discovered over time, analyzing mineral tissue analysis reports for many years, there is a deficiency in chromium in many who have the relentless desire for the small granulated sweet pellets.  I would suggest you look into getting a Chromium based mineral supplement. I use Cr-Zyme™ from Biotics Research.  You can take up to three daily, and I have had patients need up to nine daily to take the edge off the desire for sugar.

I would also encourage you to eat more greens. Greens are good and make a great base for lunch. A mixed green salad five days a week will supply your body with magnesium, which is often lacking or deficient in many who grab for a chocolate square or bar when they are feeling a bit “edgy”. I recommend NitroGreens® from Biotics Research; 1 scoop daily. I also would suggest you increase your protein and fats, eat more protein on your salad with avocado and take 3 Optimal EFAs Caps® or 3 Blackcurrant Seed Oil capsules daily.  The protein and fats from the avocado will satisfy the bodies cry for protein and fat. Also try 1 scoop of Rice Protein Concentrate. Eating a regular salad and good fat source will give your brain and emotions a rest. You will learn a lot about your patients if you have them fill out a diet journal.

Supplement FAQ: KappArest™

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/23/2012 - 2:54pm
Why you may need KappArest™:

Pain is one of the many things we humans share. And though pain may be subjective (we cannot judge each others level of it), inflammation is not. Inflammation is our body’s response to injury, real or perceived.

The inflammatory cascade is triggered by environmental stimuli such as injury, food or environmental allergens, viral infections, exposure to toxins and emotional stress, or poor diet. This leads to the activation of something called NF-KappaB, a protein complex that acts as an intracellular “amplifier” to promote the production of direct mediators of inflammation. These include such compounds as cytokines, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, nitric oxide and free radicals. If NF-KappaB is left unchecked, it can lead to pain, inflammation and even insulin resistance, and cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders. Unfortunately, inflammation has become prevalent in our society, largely sue to the pro-inflammatory nature of the Standard American Diet (SAD) and the nutritional deficits resulting from it, our high stress lifestyles, and constant environmental insults.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends KappArest™ from Biotics Research:

Formulated in conjunction with Alex Vasquez, DC, ND, DO, KappArest™ was designed to inhibit the production of NF-KappaB. KappArest™ has been shown to have a positive impact on inflammatory mediators, and has demonstrated it ability to modulate inflammatory responses. Optimal EFAs® and Bio-D-Mulsion Forte® are two additional products available from Biotics Research Corporation that are commonly used in conjunction with KappArest™ for their synergistic action in downregulating pro-inflammatory mediators that impact systemic inflammation. Once again, Biotics Research Corporation brings you “The Best of Science and Nature.”

Pain and Inflammation

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/23/2012 - 8:21am

Of the many things we all share as humans, one is pain. While we cannot judge each others levels of it, we all have it. What we choose to do about it makes for an interesting life. The old adage, “You are what you eat” becomes proven more accurate every day. But while pain may be subjective, inflammation is not. Although when you think of one, the other is right next to it. The biochemisty of an individual means person A can eat hamburgers and fries all they want and suffer few ill effects, while person B gains weight just smelling a hamburger. The final frontier for the average person is going to be that the foods they eat, the foods they love and crave are making them sick, fat and in pain. This can be as a primary cause or as a symptom of a bigger problem, whether functional, emotional or biochemical. Which means the person may be fueling their problem!
One of the simplest ways to combat pain and inflammation is to target the individual’s amounts of Histamine rich foods and Histamine releasing foods. Histamine is a natural substance produced by the body and is also present in many foods. It is released by the body during times of stress and allergy. In any type of immune system/self defense response, like an injury- response, histamine is released from the mast cells and may cause many symptoms of various organs, including pain and inflammation. Histamine is a vasoactive amine which causes dilatation of the blood vessels resulting in skin flushing, rash, itching and increased mucus production such as a runny nose, productive cough, and bronchial spasm resulting in wheezing, cough. Because histamine is contained in almost all body tissues, especially the lungs, nose, sinuses, skin, intestinal mucosa and certain blood cells (mast cells, basophils), it is able to cause a wide variety of symptoms, such as inflammation and pain.

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines Pain as ‘an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage’. Inflammation is the tissue’s immune system response to injury, real or perceived, and characterized by white blood cell response, histamine release, antibodies, swelling, heat and fluid accumulation. Pain is actually a healthy response to a problem, informing us that something is going wrong, has been damaged or close to becoming damaged. Inflammation often distorts this normal reaction, which makes the pain last longer than is. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs – such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen) and Corticosteroids (such as prednisone) are the common and easiest band aide fix for pain and inflammation. but usually with some serious side effects when taken long term. The average person or health care professional has gotten more educated on the use and mis-use of drugs and constantly battles with means of alternative health and nutritional care. Attempting to have the person take control and responsibility for their dietary health care has proven, at least clinically, to be an uphill battle in many cases. It has generally been accepted and clinically validates that by changing the person’s lifestyle, and not just the diet, that improved results in the patient’s pain perception, tolerance and degree of decrease in inflammation goes a long way.

  1. Drink water to carry away waste products
  2. Avoid foods that cause allergies or sensitivities that cause inflammation
  3. Regulate the immune system
  4. Increase essential fatty acids (omega 3 oils)
  5. Eat organic meats, poultry and fish when possible
  6. Support the body with proper nutritional supplementation
  7. Avoid inflammatory foods

Supplement FAQ: Sculacia®

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/16/2012 - 10:20am

Managing Chronic Pain & Inflammation

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/09/2012 - 6:49am

For many individuals, chronic pain and inflammation is just part of living. The “good news” is that it doesn’t have to be. Modifying diet and lifestyle, along with nutritional support, can change pain filled days to pain free living. The key is in understanding the inflammatory process and how it leads to pain. Inflammation begins with environmental triggers that get translated into genetic expression, that leads to the production of pro-inflammatory mediators that result in the clinical manifestation of pain.

Physical and emotional stress, radiation, oxidative stress, injury, food and environmental allergens, along with nutrient poor processed food diets with insufficient phyto-nutrition, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids are just some of the environmental triggers that start the inflammatory process. Once the inflammatory process is started, some of the pro-inflammatory mediators perpetuate the up-regulation of the inflammatory process. It is a process where pain begets pain.

The first step in managing chronic pain and inflammation is to modify the environmental triggers. Consider a Paleo-Mediterranean diet. Begin by removing food allergens and pro-inflammatory food from your diet. There are many healthy anti-inflammatory food choices. Your local Biotics Research distribution center can provide you with a list of hypoallergenic and anti-inflammatory foods. Vitamin D deficiencies can up-regulate the inflammatory process. If you’re suffering from chronic pain and inflammation, consider having your Vitamin D status checked with a serum 25 hydroxy Vitamin D test. If deficient, consider supplementing with Bio-D-Mulsion® or Bio-D-Mulsion Forte®. Essential fatty acid imbalances can also up-regulate the inflammatory process. Consider supplementing your diet with Optimal EFAs®, a balanced formula containing Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids.

The second step is to supplement your diet with nutrients that down- regulate the inflammatory process. A number of botanicals and nutritional factors have been shown to down-regulate the inflammatory process. Resveratrol, curcumonoids from turmeric, propolis, green tea, celery, rosemary and alpha lipoic acid are just a few of the botanicals and nutritional factors that down-regulate the inflammatory process. These botanicals and nutritional factors are part of the proprietary blend in KappArest™, a Biotics Research product designed to provide nutritional support for individuals with chronic systemic inflammation.

Addressing the underlying cause of pain and inflammation with dietary and lifestyle changes and down-regulation of the inflammatory process takes time for the maximum reduction of pain. For short term pain relief there are a number of botanicals that can provide more immediate relief. Devil’s Claw, White Willow, Boswellia, Chinese Skullcap, and Acacia Catechu are botanicals that have been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators. Bio-Allay® and Sculacia® are two Biotics Research products that provide these botanicals.

It’s time to take charge and make the dietary and lifestyle changes that can help you achieve a more pain free life.

Supplement FAQ: Optimal EFAs Caps®

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/09/2012 - 6:46am
Why you may need Optimal EFAs Caps®:

The consumption of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) is absolutely required for optimal health.  In addition to being required for the formation of cell membranes, EFAs are essential for cerebral and neurological development and functioning.  EFAs are also required for the production of hormone-like substances called Eicosanoids which are collectively responsible for regulating blood pressure and blood viscosity, along with immune and inflammatory responses.  EFA imbalances are very common in modern societies, particularly for/in those whose diet is over-reliant on grains or in those who consume an abundance of processed foods containing artificial ingredients or hydrogenated fats, in other words the Standard American Diet (SAD).  EFA deficits generally occur in combination, therefore supplementation with a balanced combination of EFAs makes sense.  Mood and memory alterations, neurological issues, high blood pressure, coagulation issues, altered cholesterol panels, slow wound  healing, impaired growth, immune and mental deficiencies, and poor vision have all been clinically associated with EFA deficiency.  Deficiencies are also associated with a wide variety of dermatological complaints – everything from dry or itchy skin, eczema, psoriasis, hemorrhagic, scaly or idiopathic dermatitis, folliculitis, skin atrophy, and edema.  Children, seniors, and those consuming altered or unbalanced diets are especially prone to EFA deficiency.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Optimal EFAs Caps® from Biotics Research:

Optimal EFAs Caps® was strategically formulated with noted researcher and author, Dr. Alex Vasquez, DC, ND, DO to provide an ideal balance of Omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids.  Supplied as a unique blend of the highest quality fish, flaxseed, and borage oils that are tested for purity, collectively they provide ALA, EPA, DHA, GLA, and Oleic Acid in ratios that are optimal.  Available as easy to take capsules or in a naturally flavored liquid formula, Optimal EFAs® are available exclusively through Biotics Research.  As always, you can count on Biotics Research to offer superior nutritional products supplying “The Best of Science and Nature”.

Supplement FAQ: Intenzyme Forte™

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:39pm
Why you may need Intenzyme Forte™:

Health researchers are continually discovering that inflammation and its effects are at the root of many illnesses and disease processes.  In fact, it can be argued that most chronic health challenges involve some degree of inflammation and inflammatory markers.  But acknowledging inflammation and addressing it are two very different entities.  Since inflammation can be caused from such a wide variety of factors – everything from physical wear and tear, diet, environmental factors, genetics, and even local or systemic allergies, it can be difficult to find an easy way to address it.  Intenzyme Forte is a potent source of both plant and animal based enzymes that are an effective combination to break down the aberrant proteins associated with inflammation, hence the term “proteolytic enzymes”.  Proteolytic enzymes are an outstanding and highly effective remedy for systemic or localized inflammation and discomfort such as muscle soreness.  The key, however, is that in order to benefit from enzymes proteolytic actions; it must be taken on an empty stomach. If taken with food, the enzyme will work as a digestive aid instead.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends Intenzyme Forte™ from Biotics Research:

Intenzyme Forte™ is a broad spectrum nutritional supplement capable of exerting influence over a variety of physiological and biochemical mechanisms, including: inflammatory processes, numerous pathways of protein metabolism, hormone processing, digestive processes, food sensitivities, immune system support, and healthy circulatory system support.  Intenzyme Forte™ also has the ability to break down mucous secretions as well. For over 30 years, thousands of healthcare practitioners have relied on the safe, effective, and reliable results that Intenzyme Forte™ has to offer.  As always, you can count on Biotics Research to offer superior nutritional products that supply “The Best of Science and Nature”.

Inflammatory Pain, Immune Balance, and Mitochondria

Biotics Blog - Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:39pm

Chronic inflammatory pain should be treated by therapeutic interventions that address the cause(s) of the problem rather than with drugs that merely lessen the effects of directly-treatable metabolic dysfunction.  Per a growing body of scientific research, immune imbalances and the systemic pro-inflammatory state that are noted in patients with degenerative, metabolic, and autoimmune/allergic diseases can be addressed directly. By directly addressing the causes of the pro-inflammatory state (rather than using drugs that suppress inflammation) we provide patients an opportunity for authentic cure, rather than perpetual medicalization.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a cause of chronic inflammation and a direct contributor to conditions such as allergy, neurodegeneration, and diabetes mellitus. Instead of attributing these diseases to “bad genes” or “unknown factors”, clinicians are more effective who utilize a multicomponent treatment plan that includes important details such as mitochondrial dysfunction. We now know that improvement in mitochondrial function underlies the clinical success of many treatments we’ve been using for years; we can also be more specific and accurate in our treatment plans to ensure that we are taking specific measures to improve mitochondrial function.

Ironically, many commonly-used medications promote and exacerbate mitochrondrial dysfunction and many of the drugs used to treat inflammation, which is partly caused by mitochrondrial dysfunction, actually lead to further impairments in mitochrondrial function. So-called anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, acetaminophen, diclofenac, indomethacin, and naproxen are documented to cause mitochodrial impairment. “Statin” drugs to lower cholesterol and metformin to lower blood sugar are known to cause mitochondrial dysfunction; these drugs are used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type-2, which is known to have mitochondrial dysfunction as a major part of its underlying pathophysiology.

Please attend the next webinar on Wednesday, April 4th at 12:00pm CST which will focus on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in chronic diseases.  Clinical interventions with diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation will be reviewed. Click here to register.

Supplement FAQ: IAG™

Biotics Blog - Tue, 03/27/2012 - 8:16am
Why you may need IAG™:

Arabinogalactan is a unique polysaccharide from the cell wall of several different plants, but it is especially prevalent in the inner bark of the larch tree (a variety of pine tree). It has long been noted for its use as an effective prebiotic and dietary fiber, but more and more studies are showing that it deserves mention for its ability to promote the health of the immune system. It has been demonstrated to have immune modulating effects and it also stimulates natural killer (NK) cell activity, which has been linked in medical literature to be physiologically decreased in a number of chronic conditions, particularly those of viral or autoimmune natures. Pediatricians frequently find arabinogalactans to be supportive towards the health of children who have frequent episodes of otitis media.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends IAG™ from Biotics Research:

Despite the fact that it is derived from trees, IAG™ is a mild, slightly sweet tasting powder.  It readily dissolves into water or juice and is a convenient choice for a wide variety of people, including young children and seniors who may be prohibited from taking pills or immune supportive herbal formulas.  In fact, IAG™ is so palatable, that if a child doesn’t see it being mixed into their juice – they usually won’t be able to detect its presence. Each bottle of IAG™ from Biotics Research Corporation contains 50 servings of arabinogalactans, making it both convenient and economical.  Once again, Biotics Research Corporation brings you “The Best of Science and Nature.

Something is in the air! Springtime Allergies

Biotics Blog - Mon, 03/26/2012 - 12:26pm

Sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery, red eyes — these are just some of the symptoms that more than 35 million Americans face each year as the pollen from trees, grass, flowers, and plants makes its way into the air. Antihistamines are the most common drugs used to treat seasonal allergies, but not everyone can tolerate these drugs, many of which can cause drossiness and react with other medications, making them suboptimal therapeutic agents. Some people have such severe reactions to seasonal allergies, that the medications have little or marginal effect. Why might this occur?

One of the most common issues many patients and doctors may not realize is that the gut is not functionally properly. When the immune system is triggered from one set of allergies, it becomes hyper-sensitized and other agents that you may not react to, or react mildly to become heightened.Since the gut (stomach) must be maintained at an acidic PH, and many people are too alkaline in their gut, they cannot split certain dietary proteins. When this occurs, the poorly digested proteins pass into the small intestine, initiating a cascade of improper digestion and inflammatory reactions. When the gut cannot properly recognize the substance which should have been broken down, it activates a histamine reaction.

There are 4 distinct Histamine receptors in the human body designated H1-H4. H1 causes, bronchoconstriction, bronchial smooth muscle contraction, vasodilatation, separation of endothelial cells (responsible for hives), and pain and itching due to insect stings; the primary receptors involved in allergic rhinitis symptoms and motion sickness as well as sleep regulation. This is the primary form patients suffer from in seasonal allergies. The interesting thing you will be marveled with, is to replete with Hydrochloric acid.

HCl-Plus™, Hydrozyme™ or Betaine Plus HP™ can remarkably influence this H1 receptor via shifting the PH of the stomach when it has become too alkaline.

If you have any experience in muscle response testing, you can challenge the gut reflex, as taught in Integrative Assessment technique, to determine if hypochlorhydria is present. If you are not familiar with this procedure, you can give the patient 2-3 HCl-Plus™, or Hydrozyme™ with a meal and see if it improves the patients symptoms. I have found that when this is a major causation, you need to use higher concentrations to attain a therapeutic effect. One Betaine Plus HP™ is equivalent to 5 HCl-Plus™ or Hydrozyme™, so dose accordingly.

Supplement FAQ: HistoPlex-AB®

Biotics Blog - Tue, 03/20/2012 - 7:55am
Why you may need HistoPlex-AB®:

From mid-spring and the onset of tree pollens, to late spring’s onset of weed pollens, followed by summer’s superfluous grass pollens, and a nearly year round onslaught of fungi and mould spores – allergic triggers are ubiquitous. Seasonal changes tend to exacerbate this. An estimated 40-50 million Americans suffer from airborne allergies. These tend to provoke responses such as respiratory symptoms, sinus congestion, nasal drainage, post-nasal drip, coughing, red, watery, runny eyes, and dark undereye circles.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends HistoPlex-AB® from Biotics Research:

HistoPlex-AB® is an innovative supplement that allows you to efficiently support your patients’ symptoms. The unique proprietary blend of standardized herbal extracts found in HistoPlex-AB® shares the distinction of having immuno-modulating effects. Fritillaria thunbergii is known to have antitussive, astringent, and expectorant functions. It is a source of fritimine, which diminishes the excitability of respiratory centers. Solidago virgaurea, commonly known as European Goldenrod, and Scutellaria baicalensis both function to counteract proinflammatory mediators which may be “triggered” as the body responds to airborne irritation. Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright) has long been used to make
improve eye pressure, itchiness, light sensitivity, swelling, and eye drainage. Morus alba is a source of quercetin 3 (6-malonylglucoside) (Q3MG), a flavonol glycoside which has known antioxidative and antiatherogenic protective effects. Saponins derive from the root of Platycodon grandiflorum have been studied for their multifarious properties including inhibiting Cox-2, TNF-a, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels.

Pollen Counts Will Soon Be Rising – It’s Time to Think about Allergies

Biotics Blog - Mon, 03/05/2012 - 3:33pm

Spring is just around the corner. Trees and flowers will soon be in full blossom filling the air we breathe with pollen. That’s right, allergy season is about to begin. This is not good news for approximately 60 million people in the United States who suffer with allergic rhinitis during allergy season. The number of people suffering from allergic rhinitis has increased from 10 percent of the population to 20% over the past 2 decades and its prevalence continues to increase. The sneezing, itching, mucus discharge and congestion that comes with allergic rhinitis can be very debilitating for many.

Pollen allergies are essentially the result of our immune system overreacting to a substance that will not harm us. While immune system antibodies are meant for killing viruses or bacteria that enter the body, there is one particular type of antibody that instead attaches itself to a harmless substance such as, pollen.  The pollen from trees, flowers and weeds act as allergens and are attacked by an antibody called immunoglobulin E, or IgE. Once an antibody specific to an antigen has formed in the bloodstream, any subsequent exposure to the particular harmless substance will cause an allergic reaction.

The most common explanation for the increase in allergies is called the hygiene hypothesis. We are born with an immune system that is unable to readily distinguish harmless substances from a potentially deadly threat. The best way for the still developing immune system to cope with this is through allergic reactions, which treat most substances entering the body as potentially hazardous and reject them. Normally, as an infant develops and encounters viruses and bacteria in their environment, their immune system shifts away from an allergic response to one capable of protecting them from infectious organisms. In today’s super-hygienic world, the lack of exposure to pathogens has promoted the continuation of the allergic response.

Another important contributor to the rising prevalence of allergies may be nutrition. Countries with high rates of asthma and allergic rhinitis have lower blood levels of certain vitamins, including vitamins C and D.  Other nutrients that may be beneficial to allergy sufferers include vitamin E (shown to reduce IgE levels in humans), Coenzyme Q10 (found to be low in 40% of patients with allergies according to a small study conducted by Folkers and Pfeiffer), Vitamin B12 (shown to reduce physiologic manifestations of allergy in ovalbumin-sensitized mice), and Bioflavonoids (shown to stabilize mast cell membranes and reduce the liberation of histamine).

If you are a seasonal allergy sufferer, it is time to prepare your body to handle high pollen counts and minimize the irritating symptoms of allergic rhinitis that come with seasonal allergies. Consider laying an immune support foundation with Bio-Immunozyme Forte. In addition, consider Bio-D-Mulsion® or Bio-D-Mulsion Forte®, along with B 12-2000™ Lozenges as easy-to-dose sources of vitamins D and B12,  Bio-C Plus™ as a great source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids, E-Mulsion 200® for your vitamin E needs and don’t forget CoQ-Zyme 30™ and CoQ-Zyme 100 Plus™ for your Coenzyme Q 10 needs.

Testing for Allergies using the Coca Pulse Test

Biotics Blog - Mon, 03/05/2012 - 11:41am

The ‘Coca Pulse Test’ developed by Dr. Arthur F. Coca is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to identify foods or substances to which one may be allergic, sensitive or intolerant.  It is based upon the principle that stress caused by intolerant foods accelerates the pulse rate.  It follows that increases in the pulse rate after ingesting particular foods can identify sensitivity to those foods.  According to Dr. Coca, “the pulse has been almost totally neglected as an indicator of ill health.”

The Coca test is self-administered and follows a simple procedure.  First, take the pulse fourteen (14) times per day for three (3) days as follows: once before getting out of bed, once before each meal, 3 times after each meal at 30 minute intervals, and just before bedtime.  The duration of the pulse recording must be one full minute.  All pulses should be taken while sitting except for the first, which is taken immediately upon waking.  Record all results and the contents of each meal.  Snacks should be avoided, but, if eaten, their contents and the pulse should also be recorded.

In evaluating the results, please note that the daily low pulse rate is normally equivalent to the waking rate pulse rate (the exception being when a suspected allergen is in the bed).  So first, make note of the highest and lowest pulse on each day.  Normally, the maximum range difference is 16 beats.  A higher rate indicates that an allergen has been encountered.

Next, calculate the average pulse, as well as the differential (the difference between the daily low and high rates).  Anything that causes variation from the differential is a suspected allergen.

If an increased pulse after a meal is noted, a dietary sensitivity can be present.  To determine which substance is the cause, eliminate select elements of that meal and test again.  Foods raising the resting pulse over 12 beats per minute above the morning resting pulse indicate a suspected allergen and should be eliminated.

Because smoking affects the results, smokers should abstain from smoking during the 3 day test.  Certain drugs, specifically those that control heart rate such as beta-blockers, also affect the test results.

Utilizing this test, Dr. Coca identified a large number of allergens and subsequently eliminated them from his patients’ diets.  For additional details on this technique, reference Dr. Coca’s book, The Pulse Test.

Supplement FAQ: IPS®

Biotics Blog - Mon, 03/05/2012 - 9:16am
Why you may need IPS®:

IPS® is a comprehensive Intestinal Permeability Support supplement. With a total surface area larger than the size of a tennis court, the intestine represents the major interface between the body and the environment. This huge area is designed to assure efficient uptake of nutrients and paradoxically, it must simultaneously exclude many substances such as microorganisms, toxins, food allergens, and endotoxins in order to maintain health. As the largest immune organ with a full compliment of immune cells (T cells, B cells, mast cells and macrophages), the intestine secretes large amounts of a specific antibody, secretory IgA (sIgA), which binds specifically to antigens and microorganisms and prevents their uptake in the gut.  Imbalanced immune function can alter intestinal permeability due to inflammation, decreased sIgA, stress, and decreased nutritional status. When the intestinal epithelium becomes injured or compromised, leaks or gaps in the mucosa may develop.  These gaps may allow allergens and foreign proteins to leak into the bloodstream, and allergic symptoms or chronic health challenges may result.

Why your healthcare practitioner recommends IPS® from Biotics Research:

IPS® is a unique formula that was designed to address the specific issue of altered intestinal permeability, supplying a comprehensive array of nutritional factors to support healthy intestinal function.  L-Glutamine is an amino acid which plays a major role in the health of the immune system and the digestive tract.  D-Glucosamine sulfate is an amino sugar which is a key building block in connective tissue and the lining of the intestines.  In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, glutathione levels are linked with healthy (anti) aging and proper immune function.  Gamma oryzanol supports the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract and helps balance pro-inflammatory mediators.  Tillandsia  helps to support healthy intestinal mucosa, and Jerusalem artichoke is a fructooligosaccaride which has been shown to promote the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.  Collectively, the components of IPS not only promote gastrointestinal health, but they also are beneficial to overall immune system function, which is key to resolving GI dysfunction.  As always, you can count on Biotics Research Corporation to offer superior nutritional products supplying “The Best of Science and Nature”.
